In one of the biggest achievements in the field of alternative dispute resolution for the university the team comprising of Mohit Rai and Akshetha Ashok broke into the Pre Finals and won the special encouragement award at the ICC Australia Asia-Pacific Commercial Mediation Competition held at Melbourne, Australia from the 27th of July to the 29th of July 2018.
The ICC Australia Asia-Pacific commercial mediation competition follows the well-established ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition Rules with a mock commercial dispute being presented to the participants wherein the competing teams represent two sides of an international commercial dispute, with members assuming the roles of the Client and Counsel. The competition also acts as the preliminary round to the ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition, held annually at the ICC Global Headquarters in Paris, France. The mediation problems were framed by a team of highly experienced mediation professionals which includes Alan Limburg, who had been described as ‘one of the 10 most highly regarded mediators in the world’ by the dispute group(2015-17), Marianne Baker, President, Taekwondo Appeals Tribunal and Member, Victorian Bar Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee, a renowned full time commercial mediator, Murray Armes, founder of Sense Studio and Christopher Miers, past President of the Dispute Resolution Board Foundation and the founder member of the Construction Contracts Mediators Group. A total of 8 teams advanced to the preliminary finals.
The team representing the university also won the encouragement award for a great performance displayed despite the adversity faced in the form of a competitive disadvantage due to the visa issues which didn’t allow one of their team mates to travel to the competition venue.
We congratulate all the members of the winning team and the Alternative Dispute resolution society for this phenomenal achievement
