NUJS hosts Spic Macay event with Padma Shri Shovana Narayan

With an aim to cultivate an appreciation for Indian classical music and dance, the Cultural Committee of NUJS recently organized a SPIC MACAY programme. Renowned danseuse and Padma Shri Awardee Shovana Narayan enthralled an audience filled with students and outsiders with her scintillating Kathak performance. The dance was coupled with live Kathak recitals.

Padm Shri Narayan kick-started her performance through a prayer to Lord Vishnu and narrated the Mahabharat through her performance. She is a disciple of eminent Pt. Birju Maharaja, and is recognized as one of the most distinguished and reputed Kathak dancers in not just India but across the world. She has also trained several Kathak artistes, some of whom are leading artists of the young generation.​ Shovana Narayan also has several accolades to her credit, chief among them being Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Award, Parishad Samman Rajiv Smriti Puraskar and Bihar Gaurav Puraskar.

SPIC MACAY is a non-political nationwide movement which was launched in 1977 to promote India’s priceless cultural heritage. SPIC MACAY has held over fifteen thousand programmes over the last three years in around 700 places across the country and abroad.

In the past, NUJS has been privileged be among the few renowned educational institutions to have hosted SPIC MACAY programmes by distinguished artist such as Padma Bhushan Awardee Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia and Shivkumar Sharma.
