NUJS stole the show at the Presidency University Debating Society Derozio Memorial Debate 2016 in association with The Times of India. The debate ended on a massive high for the University with team comprising of Ananya, Nikhil and Jalaj making it to the finals of the debate and ending up as the Runner-Ups. Further Umang Poddar, Tanmai Shukla and Kartik Chauhan went on to become the Novice Champions.  Akshaya Venkataraman was awarded the third best adjudicator in the tournament.

The tournament saw nearly 40 teams-from the country and beyond-battling for the honours over three days of intense debating from August 12 to 15. The teams included participants from St Stephen's College, Delhi, and IIT-Kharagpur, National University of Juridical Sciences, St Xavier's College, Kolkata, and Calcutta National Medical College. The event also saw the participation of a team from across the border, Bangladesh University of Professionals. A brilliant core group of adjudicators comprising top-notch debaters from institutes, such as Shree Ram College of Commerce, Delhi, National Law School, Bangalore, St Stephen's College, Delhi, and National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, ensured debating teams were given interesting motions with themes, such as 'crime and punishment', 'economic policy', 'international relations', 'feminism', 'politics' and 'culture'. The finalists argued on the motion that 'India should actively downplay the narrative of ahimsa in their history books'. At the end of the several rounds of arguments lay the prize money of Rs 2.61 lakh.
